Role: UX/UI Design

Launching a book exchange system through penguin book house.

Project Vision

Penguin Randomhouse has been serving its audience since 1935, but with the evolution of online retailers its had difficulty finding its place in the new market. Penguin is looking for a new way to engage its audience.

Penguin Random House has the opportunity to facilitate a book exchange between strangers based on shared experience. The right book at the right time can now be a multi-lifetime experience.

Challenge

1. Find a new way for Penguin Randomhouse to engage with its audience.

2. The new method should involve Penguin Randomhouse's current platform.

Quick peek to the solution

With millions of books being published every year, how does something pick the right book? Penguin Random House can connect people from around the world to share books based on information they provide about their current circumstances and worries.

Pebble by Penguin Random House is a free book exchange service. It brings people from all over the world together to share the joy of a good book!

How do you find the right book for the moment?

We found out that most books are picked up through suggestion. Whether its GoodReads or your family barber, if they make a suggestion you're more likely to pick up a book.

We wanted to figure out a way people can get an honest suggestion from a friend and we began to create a penpal kind of system. When potential participants go to their local library or online to penguin books, we give them the option to sign up to share a book with a potential friend.

User Flow Ideation.

The Journey

What kind of effect does reading have on us?

We began with ideation; first not only diving into our own favorite books but when and where we enjoy reading the most. Soon we realized that our favorite books were connected to turning points throughout our lives. Whether its going through puberty, a breakup, or even a death in the family; we could mention a book we read during those difficult times that helped guide out emotions and thoughts.

Through deeper research, we learned that reading has substantial effects on our mental health and can be seen as therapeutic.

Reading expands empathy and can help resolve conflicts amongst social groups/families because it makes us better able to understand others

User Journey

The process of signing up for Pebble is the same both online and in-store. When in a library or bookstore that supports Penguin, the potential participant will be given a laptop to sign up with.

Pebble Buddy Match

A Pebble buddy is a potential friend you can exchange a book with.

While building your profile, Pebble asks how you would like to receive your book, your favorite books and movies, and for a few examples of what’s on your mind.

When you receive your Pebble buddy you’ll have access to their profile in order to make an informed decision about what book to gift them.

Confirmation Emails

Emails throughout the process explain how to complete your profile, how choose a book for your Pebble match, and when your book has arrived at your chosen location for pickup.

The In-Store Experience
In-Store Pick Up

In-Store Pick Up/Kiosk

If Pebble users would rather not give their address out to their Pebble match, they can choose a local Pebble-approved location (a bookstore or library) to pick up the book their match sends them.

Kiosks will also be availabe at these locations, allowing people to sign up and complete all parts of the Pebble process there. We want Pebble to be accessible to everyone!
